Welcome to our Building Codes, Standards, & Regulatory Compliance Page. With constant new mandates coming from regulators, we have you covered! These resources provide the information members need to ensure compliance with local and state building codes and regulatory compliance requirements enforced by the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection and SF Department of Environment.
Upcoming Regulatory Deadlines
Commercial Real Estate professionals in California face dozens of new regulatory requirements annually. BOMA has you covered with a comprehensive document reviewing the upcoming regulatory deadlines this year.
San Francisco Existing Building Energy Ordinance Compliance
The Ordinance applies to non-residential buildings with gross floor area of 10,000 square feet or more and residential buildings 50,000 square feet or larger. All buildings are required to benchmark energy use; for commercial buildings the ordinance also requires an energy audit or a plan to reduce carbon emissions.
San Francisco Accessible Business Entrance Program
Commercial property owners of public-serving businesses need to confirm that the primary entrances are accessible to people with disabilities.
San Francisco Facade Inspection Maintenance Program
San Francisco requires that building facades are regularly inspected by a California licensed architect or engineer. If your building is 5 or more stories tall, you may need to have your facade inspected and submit a report every 10 years.
Vacant Commercial Storefront Obligations
Vacant storefronts must be registered within 30 days of vacancy and re-registered every year.
Commercial Garage Electric Vehicle Charging Ordinance
San Francisco requires that publicly accessible commercial garages and lots with 100+ parking space install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 10% of parking spaces as of January 1, 2023.
